Product Liability and Medical Negligence – PEOPIL Conference, Barcelona 2018
This year’s conferences of the Medical Negligence and Product Liability EEGs of PEOPIL (the Pan European Organization of Personal Injury Lawyers) have taken place as a single event – a Joint Conference, held in mostly sunny, but always beautiful Barcelona, on 7 – 8 June 2018.
The Medical Negligence Conference was held during the first day. Interesting and informative presentations covered such topics as the role of an expert in a medical negligence trial, as well as informed consent. In regard to the latter, PEOPIL organized a multi-jurisdictional panel, showcasing the difference in the approach to informed consent in five jurisdictions (Belgium, Italy, Poland, the United Kingdom, and USA). Michał Krzanowski, legal counsel at the BFP law firm, had the opportunity and pleasure to present on the most important aspects regarding informed consent in Poland. The first day concluded with an extremely useful, at least for all personal injury lawyers, presentation of dr Nelly Ninis, on sepsis and meningitis in children.
Product Liability took the spotlight during the second day of the Conference. Topics covered included mainly the Volkswagen litigation, as well as metal – on – metal hip implants, the latter of which BFP is actively involved in. The idea to invite wonderful speakers from both Europe and the United States of America has proven to be extremely valuable, as this allowed to show how differently certain issues are approached in different jurisdictions, and also to exchange precious experience between the participants. Other matters discussed during the panels concerned such products as vaccines and breast implants.
Moreover, the Joint Conference turned out to be – as usual – a great opportunity to make new acquaintances between European, but also a growing group of American lawyers specializing in personal injury.
